Chika Shinohara is
a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Sociology, University of Minnesota.
Her dissertation, “The Equal Employment
Opportunity Policy and Transformations of Attitudes toward Gender Roles in Japan since 1985,” focuses on Japan’s
changing labor laws and social attitudes toward women’s employment rights since
the passage of the Equal Employment Opportunity Law. She examines growing legal
consciousness in Japanese society, considering the effects of international
relations in the politics and economy, as well as of the international governmental
organizations. Her project, “How Did
Sexual Harassment Become a Social Problem in Japan? The Equal Employment Opportunity Law and Globalization,” is forthcoming
from Advances in Gender Research. Her collaborative project “The Effect of ‘Social Expectation’ on the
Development of Civil Society in Japan” with Professors Koichi Hasegawa at
Tohoku University and Jeffrey P. Broadbent at the University of Minnesota is
just published from the Journal of Civil
Society, And so is “Volunteerism and the State in Japan” from Japan
Focus. Currently, another research project, “Sexual Harassment Comes of Age: A
Comparative Analysis of the United States
and Japan” with
Professor Christopher Uggen at the University of Minnesota,
is conditionally accepted for publication in The Sociological Quarterly. She works for the IPUMS-USA Data
Project at the Population Center, University
of Minnesota.
