Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Sociology
Douglas Hartmann is an Associate Professor of Sociology and the Associate Chair of the Sociology Department at the University of Minnesota. He also is the president of the Sociologists of Minnesota, and is on the editorial boards of Ethnic and Racial Studies, Contexts and the Journal of Sport and Social Issues. He teaches classes on race relations, contemporary social theory, and qualitative research methods, as well as a new capstone version of the sociology senior projects course. His research interests focuses on race and ethnicity, multiculturalism, popular culture (including sports and religion), and contemporary American society. He is the author of Race, Culture and the Revolt of the Black Athlete: The 1968 Olympic Protests and Their Aftermath (2003, Chicago) and the co-author, along with Stephen Cornell, of Ethnicty and Race, Second Edition: Making Identities in the Changing World (2007, Pine Forge Press.) Doug received his B.A. in History and M. A. in Social Sciences at the University of Chicago. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, San Diego in 1997.
