Both a transfer student and a student studying abroad, who is planning to major or minor in Sociology will need to have their Sociology courses from other institutions evaluated by our department for acceptance into the Sociology Major or minor at the University of MInnesota.
As a student intending to major in Sociology, you will be required by the College of Liberal Arts to attend a Transfer Student Orientation. At that orientation, you may receive an overview of the major requirements for Sociology through our Sociology departmental advisor. This is the equivelant of our Sociology Information Session. If you do not receive the overview at your Transfer Student Orientation from our Sociology Advisor, you will be required to attend a Sociology Information Meeting prior to declaring a Sociology major. This meeting is usually attended by students who have either been previously undecided or who would like to switch their UofMN major to Sociology.
Any University of Minnesota Sociology major or minor who has, or is planning to, study abroad will need to check in with Sociology advising to see if the course or experience can be used within the Sociology major or minor.
If you completed sociology courses at another institution and you would need comformation from the Department of Sociology's advising office to have the courses accepted within your major or minor. It is also important to note that the course must be transferred into the University of Minnesota onto your APAS report before any official acception can be made by the Department of Sociology. However, we can do a tentative evaluation prior to an offical transfer.
If you would like to see if your specific courses have already been evaluated and if they can be applied toward your Sociology major or minor requirements, you should send an email to socadvis@umn.edu with the following information:
The Sociology Departmental advisor will then double check to see if this course has been evaluated by the Department of Sociology in the past 5 years. If so, the advisor will communicate this evaluation to you.
If this course has not been evaluated, we will need to take a look at the course very carefully. To complete an evaluation, we will examine the syllabus, and any additional course materials you can bring. The evaluation takes approximately 1-2 weeks to complete. You will be notified of the results of the evaluation.
This process of evaluating transfer courses can take several weeks, so be aware that you may have to wait awhile for the department's decision. You will be notified of the results of the evaluation.
