Sociology Major

Major Requirements

There are two options for Sociology Majors: General or Law, Criminology, and Deviance (LCD).

Required Preparatory Course

SOC 1001: Introduction to Sociology or SOC 1011V: Honors Introduction to Sociology (4 cr)

Three Core Classes

SOC 3701: Social Theory (4 cr)  [prerequisite: SOC 1001]
SOC 3801: Sociological Research Methods (4 cr)
SOC 3811: Basic Social Statistics (4 cr) [prerequisite: 2 yrs high school algebra]

Additional Soc Elective Coursework (specific requirements vary by option - General or LCD):

General Sociology

  • Soc 3xxx/4xxx: Five (4) Upper Division Sociology Electives (12 cr. total)
  • Soc 4xxx/5xxx: One (1) Upper Division Sociology Electives (3 cr.)
  • Soc 4966W: Major Project Seminar (4 cr.) or equivalent

Law/Criminology/Deviance

  • Soc 3101: Intro to Crim Just OR SOC 3102: Intro to Crim Behavior/Soc Control (3 cr.)
  • Two upper-division, LCD electives (Soc 41xx; 3 cr. each)
  • One upper-division, NON-LCD elective -- Soc 3/4xxx, not Soc 31xx or 41xx (3 cr.)
  • One soc elective of your choice - LCD or non LCD (3 cr)
  • Soc 4966W: Major Project Seminar (4 cr.) or equivalent

Major Project/Honors Thesis

Soc 4966W-Major Project (4cr). Prerequisite: all Sociology major requirements, with the exception of one Sociology elective taken with the major project. YOU MUST be on the clearance list to obtain the permission number for registration. During your major declaration appointment, we place you on the list of student records to review for your expected Soc 4966W term. If you need to change this term, notify socadvis@umn.edu at least two semesters ahead!

Soc 4977V & 4978V- Honors Thesis (6cr). Prerequisite: all Sociology major requirements with the exception of two Sociology electives). Soc 4978: Senior Honors Proseminar II (Prereq. Soc 4977 and all Sociology major requirements with the exception of one Sociology elective). Oral Defense Committee.

Sociology Honors Requirements

Students who are properly prepared should consider the distinction of Honors. To find out if you might be a candidate for this program, be sure to investigate the Sociology Honors program.

Sociology Minor

Two options are available for Sociology minors: the General option and the Law, Criminology, and Deviance option. All of the minor credits must be completed on the A/F grade basis with a result of a grade of C- or better in each course.

To declare your minor, you will need to fill out an application. You can pick up a copy of this form either in the Sociology Department's main office in 909 Social Sciences or download an application form here. Once you have completed the form, you may drop off the form in 909 Soc Sci Bldg or attach a copy in an email to socadvis@umn.edu.

Your application will be processed within two to three weeks. A copy of your minor program form will be sent to your college office. We will notify you when this has been completed.

Transfer Students declaring a soc minor must complete at least two upper level courses in our department. For information about Transfer Sociology Courses be sure to check the attached link.

Students must first complete Soc 1001(V): Introduction to Sociology before they declare their Sociology minor.

Minor Requirements

General Sociology (14 cr. + Intro)

  • Soc 3701 Social Theory (4 cr.)
  • Soc 3811 Basic Soc Stats OR Soc 3801 Research Methods (4 cr.)
  • Two upper-division sociology electives (3 cr.)

Law/Criminology/Deviance (16 cr. + Intro)

  • Soc 3101 Intro to Crim Just OR SOC 3102 Intro to Crim Behavior/Soc Control (3 cr.)
  • Soc 3701 Sociological Theory OR Soc 3811 Basic Social Stats OR Soc 3801 Research Methods (4 cr.)
  • One upper-division, NON-LCD elective -- Soc 3/4xxx, not Soc 31xx or 41xx -- (3 cr.)
