Hello, My name is Nicole Nelson and I will be the new Peer Advisor for the Department of Sociology starting Spring 2013. I grew up in Apple Valley, Minnesota and only just moved to St. Paul this winter. I am a first generation college student. I am also a new transfer student. I transferred to the U in the fall of 2012 from Inver Hills Community College with my AA degree. I am a General Sociology major, and I plan on minoring at Mass Communications. I am interested in studying the effects of mass media and popular culture on the American society. I am especially interested in studying how religion is displayed through mass media.
Outside of school I love to read and watch movies. Wes Anderson and Tim Burton are my two favorite movie directors because they have such distinct styles. I am also obsessed with my puppy, Echo. Feel free to stop by my office anytime you want to see pictures of him.
I have had previous experience mentoring students at Inver Hills Community College in the Humanities department. I hope to bring my own unique experiences as a non-traditional college student to this position to help Sociology students explore their passions and interests while also helping them to meet their major requirements. I look forward to meeting all of you soon.
If you have questions, feel free to schedule an appointment with me by calling 612-624-4300 or email me at socadvis@umn.edu. I will also have walk-in hours available.
Nicole Nelson
