Welcome from Professor Rob Warren, Director of Undergraduate Studies

From the time of its inception to the present, the Department of Sociology remains steadfast in its pledge to excellence in the classroom. Our faculty is committed to challenging each and every student -- by stressing the importance of the sociological perspective for understanding everyday life, and by focusing on ideas at the cutting edge of sociological inquiry.

Today the Department of Sociology is among the largest in the College of Liberal Arts. Our undergraduate offerings range from criminology and law, to the analysis of the family, the life course, social movements, inequality -- and much more! The department also maintains a host of opportunities for undergraduates outside the classroom, including lectures and forums, informal lunches with faculty, the Undergraduate Sociological Association, membership in key departmental committees, scholarship opportunities, and employment as teaching and research assistants. Many of our majors go on to graduate and law school, while others enter professional careers in policy analysis, education, research, public administration, and criminal justice.

In my tenure as Director of Undergraduate Studies, I hope to preserve the integrity of our past and facilitate the undergraduate program's transition into the 21st century - the second one hundred years of our life. This means bringing to the classroom the latest innovations in technology, in pedagogical approaches, and in exciting ideas at the very core of the discipline. My commitment is first and foremost to enriching students' education and the curriculum. I invite all of you to share with me you thoughts about our program. And I look forward to our collective effort to sustain and advance undergraduate education and rewarding classroom experiences.
