Information for Transfer Students
As a student intending to major in Sociology, you will be required by the College of Liberal Arts to attend a Transfer Student Orientation. At that orientation, you may receive an overview of the major requirements for Sociology. If you do not receive the overview at your Transfer Student Orientation, you will be required to attend a Sociology Information Meeting prior to declaring your major in Sociology.
If you are undecided about your major when you transfer to the University of Minnesota, or if you decide to switch your major to Sociology after taking courses at the university, you will need to attend a Sociology Information meeting prior to declaring your major in Sociology. (The schedule of current meetings can be reviewed on the How to Declare a Major in Sociology web page).
If you completed sociology courses at another institutionand you would like to see if they can be applied toward your major requirements here, you should discuss this with the undergraduate advisor when you come to fill out your major program form. If the course(s) you'd like to have applied toward your major have previously been evaluated and approved by our department, the advisor will include these courses on your major program form. If the course(s) have yet to beevaluated and approved by our department, you must submit information so that our faculty can determine whether the courses are suitable for your major. At a minimum, you'll need to provide a syllabus for the semester in which you completed the course. You should also provide as much additional information as you can about the course: textbook, class notes, papers/exams, and anything else that indicates the topics, breadth, and requirements of the course. In general, the more information you provide for this evaluation, the better informed our faculty can be in making their decision.
This process of evaluating transfer courses can take several weeks, so be aware that you may have to wait awhile for the department's decision.
Transfer students must complete at least five upper level courses in our department.
