Admission to Honors in Sociology

Requirements for the Honors B.A. Degree in General Sociology

Students interested in the sociology honors sequence must be admitted to the CLA Honors Program. Application materials are available in the CLA Honors Office, 20 Nicholson Hall.

Admission

College of Liberal Arts: CLA makes decisions regarding admission to the Honors Program at the Junior and Senior levels using the following criteria:

  • A minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA (including transfer credits).
  • Completition of at least 60 semester credits, to include at least 40 graded credits (A-F grades).
  • Selection of a CLA major.
  • At least four semesters remaining before graduation (ordinarily before 75 credits are completed).

Minimum Requirements

  1. Soc 1001 or 1011V or equivalent: Introduction to Sociology 
  2. Soc 3701: Social Theory
  3. Soc 3801W: Sociological Research Methods
  4. Soc 3811: Social Statistics
  5. Completion of five Sociology electives. At least two of the Soc electives must be at the 4xxx level or above.
  6. Soc 4977V: Senior Honors Proseminar I (fall) – pre-requisite for receipt of a permission number for this class- completion of all the Soc core courses and of at least three of the five Soc electives
  7. Soc 4978V: Senior Honors Proseminar II (spring)
  8. 3 honors experieces junior and senior year. Senior year will include Soc 4977V and Soc 4978V.

Summary of Major Requirements

  1. Completion of sociology courses totaling at least 35 upper level credits. Students may request evaluation of non-sociology UMN courses with substantially similar content or transfer sociology courses for consideration of their inclusion in the major program.
  2. Students completing a double major in another CLA department who choose to complete that department's major project must complete 31 total credits in sociology, using additional electives to replace credits that would have been earned through Sociology's major project.
  3. Students must complete a minimum of 16 upper level credits in the major as University of Minnesota - Twin Cities credit.
  4. Uniform UMN-TC Undergraduate Major Policies:
    • All courses used to fulfill minimum requirements must be completed A-F.
    • Students must receive a grade of C- or better for all courses in the major.
    • Students must graduate with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better in courses taken to fulfill major requirements.

Sociology Undergraduate Advising Office

Course syllabi and descriptions, information on faculty research interests, and assistance with various CLA procedures are available from the Undergraduate Advising Office at any time.  The undergraduate advisor is available for program and career planning, and to help with any problems that might come up as you complete your sociology major.
