Sociology Undergraduate Capstone Research Awards

Fall 2008 applications are due in 909 Social Sciences no later than the last business day in April.

Many sociology students would like to take advantage of an intensive research experience, but are often unable to do so without additional financial support. Through the generous support of an anonymous donor, the University of Minnesota Department of Sociology will be awarding several undergraduate research awards of up to $3,000 to senior Sociology majors conducting original research as part of their capstone projects.

To qualify, applicants must be:

  • Enrolled for fall 2008 in Sociology 4966 (Major Project Seminar), Sociology 4977 (Honors Proseminar), or an independent study for fall senior project under the supervision of a sociology faculty member.
  • Declared sociology majors in good academic standing;

Examples of appropriate projects include:

  • Process or outcome evaluations of community-based organizations
  • Research on social problems and their solutions
  • Qualitative or quantitative studies involving primary data collection

Interested students must submit:

  1. An application, which can be downloaded by clicking this link or picked up in 909 Social Sciences;
  2. A letter of nomination from the faculty instructor supervising your research;
  3. A two-to-three-page proposal describing your research and work plan;
  4. A one-page statement of financial need; and,
  5. A current Academic Progress Audit System (APAS) report from One Stop.

Award recipients will be required to submit a copy of their final project to Department Chair Christopher Uggen, along with a two-page report approved by the faculty advisor.
