  • Savelsberg & King Win 2012 Outstanding Book Award

    American Memories: Atrocities and the Law, authored by Joachim Savelsberg and Ryan King (Ph.D. 2005), and published in 2011 by the Russell Sage Foundation, is the recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Book Award of the Theory Division, Society for the Study of Social Problems.

  • Kent Sandstrom Named Dean

    Kent Sandstrom (PhD 1994) was named Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at NDSU on July 29, 2011. He was previously department head of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology at the University of Northern Iowa and is also co-editor of the Journal of Contemporary Ethnography.

  • Massoglia and Uggen Research in AJS

    Professor Chris Uggen's research with Mike Massoglia (2005 Ph.D), "Settling Down and Aging Out: Toward an Interactionist Theory of Desistance and the Transition to Adulthood," is featured in the September issue of the American Journal of Sociology. Their analysis of Professor Jeylan Mortimer's Youth Development Study shows how arrest and crime block the passage to adult status -- and how desisting from delinquency is part of the package of role behaviors defining adulthood.

  • Vuolo Honored with "Best Dissertation" Award

    Each year The Graduate School recognizes four of the University's top recent Ph.D. graduates with a "Best Dissertation" Award. A committee comprised of directors of graduate studies reviews applications from a pool of more than 1,000 eligible students. The 2010 winner in the Social and Behavioral Sciences and Education category is former sociology graduate student Dr. Michael Vuolo, for his dissertation, "Legal Context and Youth Drug Use: A Multilevel Analysis of the European Union." Congratulations, Mike!

  • Larson Promoted at Macalester College

    Alumnus Erik Larson (PhD 2004) has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Sociology at Macalester College. The UMN Department of Sociology congratulates Erik on this prestigious milestone accomplishment.

  • King Wins ASA Best Article Prize

    Former University of Minnesota graduate student Ryan King was awarded the 2009 American Sociology Association Sociology of Law Section Best Article Prize for his American Journal of Sociology article entitled "Conservatism, Institutionalism, and the Social Control of Intergroup Conflict." Professor King is currently an Associate Professor of Law and Criminology with the Department of Sociology at SUNY - Albany. Congratulations, Ryan!

  • Sara Wakefield in NY Times

    Minnesota Ph.D. graduate Sara Wakefield (2007), now an Asst. Professor at UC-Irvine, is quoted in a July 4, 2009 article published by The New York Times. The article cites Wakefield's dissertation research on the mental health outcomes of Chicago children with imprisoned parents.
