Contexts, one of the flagship publications of the American Sociological Association, will be coming to the University of Minnesota Department of Sociology summer 2007. With its mission of bringing sociological knowledge and information to a broader public audience, Contexts fits well with the Department's commitment to engaged sociology and publicly relevant scholarship. Professors Chris Uggen and Doug Hartmann will be the co-editors while it is based here from 2008-2010.
Working with the faculty co-editors of Contexts, the Managing Associate Editor will providing editing, writing and management support through all the stages of production to ensure a high-quality timely quarterly publication of the scholarly journal.
Editorial Management (Supervision/Written Feedback) 35%
Handle all communications between the UMN editorial office and the publisher; manage correspondence between Co-editors and authors. Read and evaluate editorial projects. Confer and correspond with authors in the preparation and editorial revisions of feature stories, culture reviews and other stories. Attend weekly graduate workshop for student board (comprised of 6-8 students). Supervise student board assignments and responsibilities, and prepare reports on editorial board projects. Oversee submissions; manage trajectory of submissions for editors; supervise book review process; coordinate contacts with potential author. Ensure the smooth flow of manuscripts and proofs to authors, copy editor, and press.
Content Development (Idea Generation/Writing/Editing/Design) 35%
Consult with the Co-editors regarding topic ideas and potential authors and contributors. Direct in the planning and development of editorial projects. Provide independent editing, original writing, and rewriting of material. Analyze editorial projects for content accuracy, grammatical construction, and style. Write reports recommending changes in arrangement, style and content as needed. Provide copyediting and proofreading for all journal content. Collaborate with a variety of subject matter specialists in the development of acceptable editorial projects for publications. Oversee identification of images and graphics.
Journal Production 20%
Oversee journal’s production from story assignment to bound book; quarterly distribution of approximately 80 pages each issue. Handle production of all printed material. Work with graphic designer on layout and preparation of graphic materials. Reviews materials in final production stages. Ensure that all published materials conform to professional editorial standards. Act as a liaison with the university press and with private contractors on all aspects of production. Coordinate ads with university press salesperson and negotiate any conflicts concerning allocation of ad space and ad content. Obtain high resolution photos and graphics. Paginate journal (articles and ads).
General Administration 10%
Manage all office operations including monitoring and maintaining the budget, initiating/approving all expenditures, and budget projections. Secure author agreements from contributors, oversee permissions and copyright, and liaise with publisher’s legal department. Create database of issue contributors and coordinate fulfillment of copies to authors. Perform other duties as required.
Required Qualifications:
**BA/BS and two years administrative experience to include editing and/or
publication experience or a total of six years combined college education
and relevant editing/publishing experience.
**Proficiency with desktop publishing software, computer editing and database
tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
A bachelor's or advanced degree in English, journalism, social sciences,
or a related field.
Three or more years of full-time publication and/or editing experience.
Excellent editing skills.
Some bookkeeping/accounting knowledge.
Proficiency with Quark Xpress and Adobe Creative Suite software.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Proven
success in working independently and as a contributing member of a team.
Demonstrated ability to think broadly and pay attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple projects and set priorities.
