Bushaway Preservation Project

Officially, Bushaway Road is the Wayzata, Minnesota segment of County Road 101 between 394 and Gray’s Bay Bridge. Arguably the most beautiful segment of 101, it features stone walls and iron gates hiding among hundreds of oaks, maples and weeping willows. Its 150-year anniversary was celebrated in 2008.

Bushaway also is a small neighborhood with a legendary past. Today it is a prestigious community, although the young people no longer inter-marry like they did 100 years ago.

The Bushaway Preservation Fund was created in 2009 to cover costs of the Bushaway neighborhood in its research and negotiations to preserve the historic and scenic character of Bushaway.

The Bushaway Preservation Fund commissioned the respected firm of Mead & Hunt to conduct a historical significance study. Their report concludes that Bushaway meets the qualification criteria for the National Register of Historical Places. Their report is downloadable here.

Over the past year, Irene Stemmer, Chair of the Wayzata Historical Preservation Board, has been conducting historical searches and interviews to capture the social and architecural histories of Bushaway. This was completed in September, 2009 and can be downloaded as History of Bushaway Road and its Neighborhood: 1858-2009.

The Hennepin County Transportation Department has designed a reconstruction plan that would greatly widen the road, take out 350 trees and otherwise intrude on the ecology of the community. To read more about it, go to the Neighborhood website.

The Hennepin County's PowerPoint presentation (as a PDF file) of their road re-design is available for download as the following
County Presentation to Wayzata TF on 3sept09.

As part of their presentation they upplied three design options that differed only in terms of the intersection plan for the crossing of Bushaway Rd and McGinty Rd. Two high resolution PDF drawings can be downloaded here:

The Bushaway Task Force, appointed by the Wayzata City Council, on October 19, 2010 released a 47-page report. It includes rationales and detailed recommendations for preserving the historic, scenic, ecological, and cultural aspects of the Bushaway corridor. To read it, click download.

This web page has been created by Ron Anderson for the purpose of helping the Bushaway project and making large files of information available. Most of these files are too large for the main Bushaway website. However, a wealth of additional information is maintained on that site: http://bushaway.wetpaint.com/
